Step 1 – Gear. You can use any fishing gear you already have or go get a basic surf rod from Wal-Mart ($20-30). These rods can land something up to 30Lbs. If you hook something a lot larger, you may find that the gear does not hold up, but it should server a beginner well.
Minimum you need 1 Rod, 2 3 or 4 ounce Diamond Weights, 2 Leaders, 4 Circle hooks, 1 small knife (For Bait), PVC pipe to hold the rod. Throw everything back unless you know how to prepare the fish for a meal. Be sure what you keep is legal. Step 2 – License. 16 & over need a license. http://saltwaterfishing.sc.gov/license.html Step 3 – Bait. I think Squid is the best for beginners. It does not come off easily. The Bait you use does impact the type of fish you will catch. Some species will only take live bait. But as a beginner - Squid will catch fish. Step 4 – Fish. Go to the beach, tie on a hook and weight, Bait it, and cast into the surf. |
